The primary responsibility of Scientist Educators is to deliver SciSci’s signature programming in grade 3-8 classrooms in partner schools. This includes all aspects of teaching of SciSci learning experiences, such as preparation/planning, teacher communication, lesson delivery, and maintenance/storage of curriculum materials. Typically, SciSci’s Scientist Educators work in pairs when delivering in-school programming. SciSci Educators may also deliver programming in out-of-school and community settings.
Training will be provided.
- Minimum: Must hold an undergraduate degree in a STEM field with research, internship, or other STEM-related work experience; exceptional applicants nearing completion of undergraduate degree may be considered. Preferred: Progress toward or completion of a graduate degree in a STEM field or comparable work experience.
- Prior experience teaching, coaching, or mentoring youth preferred.
- Reasonable schedule flexibility to accommodate working in multiple schools with various start and end times.
- Excellent communication skills (in-person, video call, and via email). Ability to develop positive rapport with colleagues and diverse stakeholders, including, but not limited to, students, teachers, school leaders, and other school staff.
- Ability to effectively present science lessons in a classroom setting and move about the classroom to distribute/collect materials and interact with students for a full school day.
- Ability to effectively utilize team collaboration tools such as Google Workspace, Zoom, and Slack.
- Valid driver’s license and/or access to a reliable form of transportation to get to school sites.
- Occasional lifting of curriculum kits (5-25lbs) required. Accommodations can be made if needed.
- Clearance on background check. Upon hiring, Scientist Educators will be required to pass any additional background checks, as required per state of employment and by partner schools.
- Part-time, nonexempt hourly from August/September to June, with some summer opportunities possible. Base level part-time commitment is 1 school day (6 hours) every other week. Scientist Educators are hired mid-school-year based on need.
- Part-time pay ranges from $26.50 – $34.50 per hour, depending on experience.
